Topical fluoride application

In children with a very high risk of decay we may suggest a topical fluoride application by the dentist or hygienist.

Topical fluorides such as gels or varnishes are placed in special mouth tray carriers and applied to the teeth. This is left in the mouth for about five minutes. Full oral hygiene instruction and dietary advice is also given, and for some children we may prescribe a special fluoride gel for daily home use.

We use fluoride in these situations because it makes the surface of the tooth more resistant to acid attack and decay, and promotes the remineralization of already slightly decayed areas. This may reverse the decay process and prevent a filling being needed.
